About the Production

Paradox Opera (PXO) will present a production of Gian Carlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, reimagined for today’s diverse audiences. This production is fully staged with piano and oboe accompaniment, and will be centered around the diversity of individuals across the LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual/Agender, Plus) spectrum and the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) community, with the inclusion of performers representing those various identities cast from both people in the North Carolina community and Nationally.

“Ever since Gian Carlo Menotti’s marvelous work first premiered in 1951 as the first opera specifically composed for television, it has captivated audiences. I am beyond thrilled to work with Alissa and the rest of the immensely talented artists at Paradox Opera to bring this story to life once more,” says director Collins Wilson.

Set near Bethlehem just after the birth of Christ, Amahl and the Night Visitors tells the story of the Three Kings as they follow a star to Bethlehem. A miracle happens when they stop for shelter at the home of Amahl, a poor, crippled shepherd boy who lives with his widowed mother. Inspired by the Wise Men’s tale of a kingdom “built on love alone,” Amahl offers his own simple gift to the Christ Child.

“Through the power of music, we share a profound message: No matter who you are or what you look like, we all share common struggles, joys, and dreams, and we tell the same stories,” says Paradox Opera artistic director Alissa Roca.
